The dogs usually come when I call them. Especially when it’s dinnertime. Today when I called them, everyone came to their bowls except Sassy. She was circling around in the tall grass, cautiously watching the three other dogs eat. So, I called her again. No response! She just looked at me. Wondering what was going on with her, I picked her bowl up and offered it to her. This was totally unlike her. If anything, she’s the one who shows up first for food.
For several minutes, I tried coaxing her to no avail. Suddenly, she picked up something that looked like an old rag and came bounding over to me. I quickly noticed it wasn’t a rag, as I wrinkled my nose. It happened to be an old piece of rotting deerskin she had found in the woods and developed a real fondness toward. She carefully dropped it into her food bowl, of all places, and then proceeded to eat around it. I thought, Sassy is just like a child bringing her doll to the dinner table. Don’t you just marvel at what goes on in their heads?
