The following is a post from Peter’s wife, Katrina.
As you have probably already guessed, I’m not a fan of antiperspirants because several of the ingredients have been linked to major health issues. Yuck! That’s why about 15 years ago I switched from my most favorite antiperspirant to a store-bought natural deodorant just to avoid the most harmful chemicals. It worked perfectly for me for a long time and I didn’t mind the change at all. Then, recently I made another switcheroo. I changed to a homemade deodorant that is even better and costs less. It’s super easy to make and you only need three ingredients. Plus, it’s just as effective as any deodorant I’ve ever bought in the store. Really!
And if you don’t believe me, ask my husband, Peter. He works out in the gym regularly and wants a deodorant that really works. So I whipped him up a batch of my homemade recipe with a “manly” scent and asked him to try it. Guess what… He absolutely loves it. He says it lasts longer and smells better than any of the other deodorants he has bought in the store! High praise from someone who likes to work up a sweat by lifting weights almost every day but still likes to smell nice!
So here’s your recipe for a homemade all-natural deodorant.
All-Natural Deodorant Recipe
¼ cup baking soda
2 teaspoons coconut oil
20 drops essential oils
Place the baking soda into a medium-sized bowl. Put one teaspoon of coconut oil into the bowl and thoroughly work it into the baking soda with a fork. This may take a minute or two. When it’s well blended, the mixture will still be a little dry. Add the second teaspoon of coconut oil and work that in until the baking soda and coconut oil are fully blended. At this point the baking soda will hold together allowing you to pick up small bits of baking soda without leaving baking soda residue all over. Now add your favorite essential oils, blend well, place it in a small jar and you are done.
When you are ready to use it, take a small pea-sized piece of your deodorant, put it into the palm of your hand and rub gently between your palms. Then rub each palm under you arm lightly coating your armpits with the deodorant. Now you are ready to face the world!
Things to note…
Choosing your essential oils: This is a personal preference. I prefer a more floral scent and Peter prefers something a little earthier. Whatever you decide, pick something you really like because you will be smelling it throughout the day. I also like to add a few drops of Rosemary essential oil and/or Geranium essential oil for their anti-microbial properties. And finally, I do recommend that you test any essential oil on a small patch of skin before you put it into your deodorant. Some people have reactions to certain oils and it is better to know BEFORE you put into your armpits.
Adding coconut oil: I have a friend who said she doesn’t want to put coconut oil in her deodorant because she’s afraid it will leave oil stains on her clothing. From my experience over the past two months, the oil quickly absorbs into the skin on your hands and under your arms and has not left ANY marks or stains on my clothing. Plus, with all the wonderful things I’m hearing about coconut oil, I think it may even be beneficial to put a little bit under your arms. And… there’s one more benefit. When I try putting plain baking soda under my arms I end up with white powder all over the floor, the walls, the sink, my clothes, my hands, my face, etc. I can’t figure out how to use it without making a mess all over. So, the oil helps the baking soda stick together as your apply it. You can make this recipe without the coconut oil, but I definitely prefer it with.
So there you have it! A simple recipe to make your own all-natural deodorant. Enjoy!
